The levels of Thirst - مراتب الحاجة إلى شرب الماء
39 plastic and glass containers filled with water, printed A4 paper, 24 digital prints – ongoing
39 plastic and glass containers are filled with water collected from natural water sources in Lebanon, and placed directly in the sunlight, on a lower window seal. Putting the water in transparent glass containers was a common practice to disinfect contaminated water during the Lebanese Civil War, and the method is still used today in the region where risky urbanization, corruption and ongoing conflitcs have affected water availability, water cleanliness and pollution. A typed and handwritten paper, placed behind two large jugs, lists the phases of thirst in Arabic, from its first level “Al Atash”:normal thirst; to the most severe, “Al Jouwadou”: murderous gasp – quoted from Al Thaalibi’s (961-1038) lexicographical dictionary Kitab Fiqhu l-Lugha wa Sirr Al Arabiyya. Under the shelf of water containers, print outs of iphone pictures that were taken from each location whereby each bottle was filled, are sticking on the wall with paper tape. After filling each bottle, the date and the location of the filling is marked.
